A cab driver has been stiffed out of AU$3,425 after being tricked into making a 20 hour trip from Miami to Western Tennessee.
CBS4 reports Miami resident Luciolo Perez convinced a cabbie from Flamingo Taxis to drive him to Memphis, Tennessee.
Taxi driver Lelis Almeira obliged, and over the 1,600 mile journey stopped for gas, rest and meals - and paid for everything.
The Associated Press has reported Memphis police arrested Perez on a charge of theft over US$1,000.
Perez reportedly told Almeira the woman he was visiting would pay when they arrived.
The woman, Memphis resident Nellie Rose insists she didn't have the money and made that clear to Perez.
"We ain't going to promise something we don't have," said Rose.
"I don't know why the cab driver and him came on to Memphis.That's between them."
Flamingo Taxis dispatcher Joel Lubin says such a scam hurts drivers especially hard, given the tough economic times they have suffered through the year.
"He didn't have to do it," Lubin said of Almeira's generosity.
"He spent all his money for the expenses. He paid for meals on his credit card expecting to get paid."
In addition to the cab fare, Perez must now find enough money for bond to get him out of jail.
