Round 14 Discussion / Results

Users who haven't yet tipped:

First up is a Friday night blockbuster between the red hot Pies and a resurgent Essendon side. Collingwood have been on an impressive run, comfortably winning their last five games, with Dane Swan in particular being extremely dominant. Ominously, they're only now approaching full strength for the first time in weeks, with Leon Davis and Scott Pendlebury returning to the side to compliment Paul Medhurst, Alan Didak and Dale Thomas who have also recently missed weeks. In contrast, Essendon are missing their most important player in Jobe Watson to an ankle complaint and Mark McVeigh to an internal suspension following a drinking session with Fremantle's similarly suspended Dean Solomon. All the logical signs point to a comfortable win for Collingwood, but Essendon have thrived on making life uncomfortable for their traditional rivals this year, and Collingwood's probably the biggest one of the lot. Famously their most recent match was a classic, with newcomer David Zaharakis kicking the winning goal in the dying seconds. It's hardy to see any outcome but Collingwood being too classy, but I would've said something similar last week before the Carlton game.

The first Saturday arvo game is Melbourne vs West Coast in a game that's sure to be amongst the most poorly attended of the year. Luckily, it's at the MCG, while 30,00 will have to be turned away from the Saints v Cats game at the Dome. Anyway, Melbourne have been competitive all season until recently when they've started actually getting properly thumped, and West Coast have been competitive at Subiaco, even going as far as beating the reigning premiers there last week, and absolute gash elsewhere. As it stands they haven't won away from Perth since 2007. Throwing some spice into the mix is the fact that Jim Stynes, president of Melbourne FC and one of the club's longtime favourite sons, has just been diagnosed with cancer. It's almost impossible to tip Melbourne at any point but if you were ever going to this is the time I'd say. They've got a lot to play for and are coming up against the best possible opposition for them to be playing.

The other Saturday afternoon game sees Port Adelaide taking on a Brisbane side high on confidence and form at AAMI Stadium. Port are floundering a bit after taking the season on early, and Brisbane are quietly going about their business, beating everyone they should be beating and taking the odd prized scalp (Hawthorn in Tassie prime amongst them). Port are coming off the back of a convincing loss to Geelong at Kardinia Park, while Brisbane most recently mauled Brisbane at the Gabba. The key man will be Jonathon Brown in this game. If he gets a head of steam up like he has in the last three weeks he's going to be impossible for Port to contain. Honestly I'd be pretty surprised if the All Australian team doesn't contain the name J. Brown at the end of the year. I'd also be pretty surprised if Brisbane drop this game, especially if they're serious about a top four spot. The only thing I could see getting Port over the line is home ground advantage.

The first of the Saturday night games pits Richmond against Adelaide up on the Gold Coast, because playing nearly 2000 km away is actually preferable to playing at Telstra Dome. Richmond have been probably the biggest disappointment of the competition this season, sitting 3-10 after all the Ben Cousins related pre season excitement around them. Adelaide have been one of the biggest surprise packets this season, turning around their old 'Crowbot' reputation by playing some flowing, exciting footy, and all whilst playing their kids, which is probably the most exciting thing. This week they're debuting a name that's somewhat familiar: young Shaun McKernan, brother of (almost) Brownlow Medallist Corey, has been named at centre half forward. The Crows are in super hot form and it's hard to see them dropping this one to frankly average opposition.

Back down south there's another potential blockbuster at the Dome, this time between the third placed Bulldogs and the reigning premiers Hawthorn. The Hawks are going to be desperate to get their season back on track, and the Bulldogs would be pretty excited to ruin their season. Hawthorn finally welcome back Stephen Gilham after an extended absence for some much needed muscle in their backline, while Daniel Giansiracusa's knee is in all sorts of trouble and he'll be missing for the Dogs. Given the respective recent form of both teams you'd have to be pencilling in the Bulldogs here, but Hawthorn are a team desperate not to miss finals and you can never underestimate desperation. I think the Bullies will get over the line in a tight one.

The first of the Sunday afternoon games has us a bit further north at the SCG, where Sydney are playing North. Both teams are struggling to make an impact this season, with North being cruelled by injuries, and Sydney having to deal with the fact that their players are all either old, average, or Barry Hall. Both have been in dismal recent form (although Sydney could have beaten Hawthorn a few weeks ago except for a Barry Hall brain snap), and I don't think this game will be a contest for the ages. Sydney have only lost once in Sydney this season, to perennial rivals Collingwood, and North, whose season is over, have struggled basically everywhere they've gone, so it's hard to really see Sydney losing this one, even if they are missing Hall.

The other Sunday game is coming at us from the West, where Carlton have taken their travelling circus to Subi to try and salvage some semblance of pride against Freo after their dismal showing against Essendon last week. To that end, they've made some huge changes this week, dropping big names in Nick Stevens and Heath Scotland and stopping just short of dropping Brendan Fevola. Brett Ratten's publicly thrown the gauntlet down to his players and it's now really very much up to them to respond, which they really should be able to do. Freo are going to be missing their skipper Matthew Pavlich with a calf injury, and Dean 'Fuckwit' Solomon who's copped an internal suspension for boozing it up with Mark McVeigh. It's hard to see Carlton dropping this game, especially with their season on the line, but the trip to Perth can do horrible things to a team.

Now, I thought I was done with this, but I just looked up and realised there's only seven games in the run down. I guess there must be another one but I can't for the life of me remember what the other one is. I guess it's the lack of hype on this one given all the build up for the Melbourne vs West Coast blockbuster.

You know it's true. The guy's the biggest fuckwit to hit the AFL since Wayne Carey.

He is a fuckwit, but he is far from the biggest fuckwit since Wayne Carey. You're just saying that because he smashed Ling.

Surely Fev gets a mention. Aker's not a bad bloke at all. Mooney doesn't seem like a bad bloke either. From all reports Scarlett is a monumental fuckwit though.

Yeah, you're probably right. Fev certainly rates a mention. Barry Hall obviously is a gargantuan fuckwit. Steve's opinion generally is irrelevant given he's followed footy for like two years AND goes for Collingwood so we can rule out Aker and Mooney right there. Scarlett does seem like he's a cunt of a bloke to know though. None of them really hold a candle to Carey though.

Holy shit. I don't even think I was that excited during the last grand final. What a game! The Saints sure did come marching in.
