I think Strife just chucked up the standard thread (as I was thinking about doing) since Rudi has let us down.
Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

Did Rudi get taken hostage by rebels or something?

I've had various commitments that have prevented me making the thread in the last few days, namely a hangover, Guitar Hero Metallica, indoor soccer, work and indoor cricket.

Tonight sees a Carlton team that's struggling to live up to its potential take on a West Coast side that has little in the way of potential. Carlton are looking a bit dazed and confused at the moment after going goalless for a half against Adelaide and West Coast lost a very winnable game at Subi against a very undermanned Collingwood. Of particular interest tonight will be the form of Fevola and Cox. Fev has kicked one goal in two weeks, and Cox was beaten last week by Josh Fraser and Cameron Wood (seriously). The return of Brad Fisher suggests that the Blues are going to revert to a more orthodox forward line after their experiment with their structure last week proved fruitless. The Eagles have basically conceded their season is over, but Carlton have something to prove and should be too strong for West Coast tonight.

First Saturday game is the (nearly) all conquering Bulldogs taking on a very in form Sydney in Canberra. I anticipate this to be a horrendous game to tip. Both teams looked extremely good last week, with the Bulldogs last second loss to the Cats somehow managing to look more impressive than Sydney's effortless dismantling of Port Adelaide. I have a feeling the result of this game will depend on which team forces the issue more - if Sydney are allowed to play their Paul Roos stoppage-fest then they'll probably win, but if the Bulldogs can make the game more open with their high possession run and carry style (last week they out-possessed Geelong, the first time that's happened all season), then they should come out with the chocolates. The Bulldogs are missing some small defenders, but with Ryan O'Keefe out of form and Michael O'Loughlin playing a key position this season you'd think this wouldn't be such an issue against a Barry Hall inspired Sydney. Adam Goodes will obviously be the danger man for Sydney, as he is every week, and Aker and Daniel Giansiracusa will probably be the main forward keys for the Dogs given the absence of Rob Murphy.

Back down south at the Dome, a resurgent North Melbourne take on a quite accomplished looking Brisbane Lions outfit. Fresh off an increasingly rare win, North will be high on confidence, while the Lions will be similarly buoyed by their gallant effort against league leaders St. Kilda last week. The main obstacle facing North will be the same obstacle they'll have to face most weeks of the season - the midfield. Brisbane will almost certainly have too much class in the middle for the battling North brigade, which is handy for them because they need to win in the middle to avoid exposing their currently very short backline given the ongoing absence of Daniel Merrett and Joel Patfull. North have a very tall forward line, with Aaron Edwards, David Hale and Drew Petrie all capable of strong grabs and scoring from set shots. The Lions found a way to nullify Riewoldt in the second half last week by dropping their highest goal scorer ever Daniel Bradshaw back on to him. However this sort of match up is arguably a win for North, as it largely isolates as Jonathon Brown as Brisbane's main goal scoring threat. Another factor working against the Lions is that it's their second straight week in Melbourne. However, I still think their midfield class should push them over the line.

The first Saturday night game has Freo at home to Richmond in a game sure to revolutionise how football is played for at least the next two decades. The ultra slick ball movement and ability to spot up targets and hit them with unerring accuracy is a cherished trademark of both teams and I expect this to be a free flowing encounter, with both teams putting on dazzling displays of attacking football and with breath taking defensive efforts.
The only thing that wasn't a lie in that paragraph is that Fremantle is playing Richmond at Subiaco. This is almost certainly going to be an abysmal game of football. The only real highlight is Ben Cousins coming back from injury (again), and the fact that he's sure to get a very interesting reception from the Dockers crowd. This game is almost impossible to tip, it's hard to see Richmond ever winning a game of footy ever again but my personal golden rule is never under any circumstances ever tip Fremantle, so just toss a coin I guess.

In another game that's sure to be unbelievably interesting and competitive, the exceptional Saints take on the dismal Demons on the Gold Coast for some reason. This is a Melbourne game, and what's more a Melbourne game in Queensland. The only hope they have is if St. Kilda are switched off for their entire four quarters and regard them and the venue with absolute complacency. But I really can't see it. The Saints should win big here.

The first Sunday game this weekend is Adelaide vs Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium. This game last year was an absorbing contest decided by a very late Luke Hodge goal. Hodge has recently joined the very long Hawthorn injury list and will be missing in action along with many of Hawthorn's premiership stars. Adelaide, however, welcome back Nathan Bock to the heart of their defense, who genuinely does very well on Hawthorn's perennial danger man Buddy Franklin. However, this season Jarryd Roughead has been just as dangerous as Buddy and will command another top line defender you'd imagine, so perhaps Bock will have to split his attention. Another focus will be on who Michael Doughty takes after his remarkable clamp job on Chris Judd. Mitchell you'd imagine. This is another toughy to tip, but I sort of expect the Hawks to drag themselves over the line.

The middle Sunday game sees the Cats taking on the freewheeling Bombers at Telstra Dome. This game is actually a fairly enticing prospect, both teams are highly attacking and love to stream through the middle of the park with abandon. The Cats are going to be missing two high class forwards in Paul Chapman and the bizarrely suspended Mathew Stokes, but welcome back Cam Mooney as the focal point of attack and Darren Milburn as a calming influence in defence. Essendon have some concerns themselves; missing the injured Courtenay Dempsey and suspended Nathan Lovett-Murray, both of whom provide crucial run for the Dons. A key match up will be Cameron Ling on Jobe Watson and Tayte Pears on Tom Hawkins. Hawkins could well be the key for the Cats, receiving the ball on the lead from Cam Mooney and the midfielders. The Cats are heavy favourites here but by no means sure things.

The last game of the round is also strangely the only game of the week at the MCG: Collingwood vs Port Adelaide. Collingwood are coming off a rousing win away to West Coast, and Port are backing up a dismal display against Sydney. Port I've found to be one of the hardest teams to pick this season; at least Fremantle are reliably shit. With that said, it's difficult to imagine Collingwood losing this game, especially as they finally welcome back their talismanic small forwards Alan Didak and Dale Thomas, and with Neon Leon Davis in such scintillating form. However the Port playing group have apparently undergone a searching self analysis during the week and may be coming out firing. Still I can't see the Pies dropping this one.

Hahaha - that paragraph about the Freo v Richmond game more than makes up for the tardiness of your pre-round analysis submission.

Hey, I had perfectly legitimate reasons for that tardiness.
