I had similar feelings once (about wanting to get out of where I was at the time, anyway), so my advice to you is to take a chance and get up to California.
Check yourself into a youth hostel/backpackers, and you'll meet dozens of different people. Odds are you'll find some people who share the same interests as you. Then find a job, make some money and have some fun. Who knows what you'll do from there? Return home with a renewed lust for life? Keep traveling with some friends you make while you're there? You might even fall in love with the place and stay there for the rest of your life! All I know is that after I came home, all I wanted to do was travel again!
My point is, you'll never know if you don't try. What have you got to lose? A couple of dollars? You can always make more of them. It was a life changing experience for me when I packed up and went North to a tropical paridise to live and work for a few months, and I'll bet that you'd have a similar time...
Also, just 'cause you've finished High School doesn't mean you have to drop out of contact with your mates. I'm still close with a bunch of my school friends. As a matter of fact, a number of them regularly post in this forum!
By the way, the line from Paranioid is I am frowning all the time, but I think it makes more sense for your situation anyway...
